Flush Grouted

Flush Grout Glass

For those who prefer a seamless finish, grout-fixed balustrades deliver a minimalist aesthetic with maximum transparency. The result is a continuous, elegant barrier that blends effortlessly into its surroundings.

  • System: glass is set into a continuous channel and the channel is filled(flush with non-shrink cementitious grout or structural epoxy/PU grout which embeds the base of the glass panel or the glass shoe.

  • Grout strength: high-performance structural grouts are commonly specified up to 70 MPa compressive strength Typical structural non-shrink grouts for balustrade anchors commonly range 30-70 MPa depending on product and specification.

Spigot Mounted

Spigot Mounted Balcony Glass

A versatile option that works almost anywhere. Spigot mounting provides strength and stability while keeping the glass cleanly elevated for a floating, modern look.

  • Material: stainless steel 304 for interior/non-coastal; 316 for coastal/exposed environments.

  • Types: surface-mounted or core-mounted spigots; can be fixed to concrete, steel or structural slab.

  • Anchoring:  chemical epoxy anchors or through-bolt anchors are used and sized for substrate and load. Grouting under base-plates may be required.

  • Glass interface: glass sits in rubber gasket and is clamped by the spigot body with set screws or cap bolts

  • Sealing & drainage: spigots and glass interfaces are detailed to avoid water ingress and corrosion points.

Specification and Performance

  • Balustrades must be not less than 1000 mm above finished floor level

  • Around swimming pools the minimum height is 1200 mm.

  • The balustrade must be provided where there is a drop or risk of falling.

  • SiON Balustrade Glass is always a minimum of 10mm toughened safety glass to comply with SANS 1263-1, which dictates the line load and impact load resistance of the balustrade glass.

  • Each pane is permanently and clearly marked to verify that it is safety glass.

  • The balustrade glazing will leave no gaps larger than 100mm

  • The balustrade’s strength is only as good as the substrate it is fixed to - Installers must issue an engineer’s certificate (sometimes called a “balustrade compliance certificate” or “Form 3” sign-off) certifying the system is installed to regulation and design specs.

  • Deviation from the rules (e.g., unusual spans, frameless, large glass panels, edge support) must be signed-off by a competent structural engineer or competent glazing person.
